Doctors at Dubai Hospital managed to save the life of a 50-year-old patient who had suffered for several years from severe pain in the flank area, due to large stones in the left kidney.
The patient underwent a complex surgery to break up and remove the stones, which are medically known as “antler antlers”, due to their large size and ramifications.
The patient was referred to several hospitals in different European countries, but they refused to treat him because of his morbid obesity (180 kilograms), which poses a danger to his life, especially since the stones branched from the kidney pelvis and extended with appendages in the pockets of the kidney, which made extraction very difficult due to the possibility of bleeding.
The consultant of the Department of Urology, Dr. Friborz Bagheri, who supervised the medical team, said that the patient visited Dubai Hospital and was suffering from severe pain in the flank area and discomfort, as a result of his inability to lose weight, while the size of the gravel was growing until it reached a diameter of seven centimeters, and branched to take the form of “antler”, which contributed to occupying most of the kidney cavities (about 10 centimeters long).
He added that the patient began to suffer from frequent urinary infections, which began to constitute an additional burden on his daily life.
He stated that the medical team conducted the necessary laboratory tests and CT scans for the patient in the departments of urology, cardiology, thoracic diseases, and anesthesia before undergoing surgery to remove stones.
Bagheri said that the challenge facing the medical team was the excessive obesity of the patient, as he remained lying on his stomach throughout the surgery, while he used the laparoscope through a small opening to break the stones into small pieces and extract them completely from the cavities of the kidney.
He explained that the patient left the hospital on the third day of the operation and is in good health without any negative complications, noting that this type of gravel is usually extracted in several stages due to its large size, but the efficiency of the medical team and the availability of modern devices and technologies made it possible to extract the stones in one stage.
Dr. Maryam Al Raisi, Executive Director of Dubai Hospital, stressed that these surgeries require skill and experience in dealing with complex pathological cases, pointing to the diagnostic and therapeutic services provided by the hospital to patients in various medical specialties, which contribute effectively to enhancing the competitiveness of the health system in Dubai.
She said that the Health Authority adopts the latest technologies and smart solutions and is keen to attract distinguished medical competencies and harness their expertise to serve patients to achieve the best results.
Hospitals in European countries refused to treat the patient because of his morbid obesity.
