Former president continued his trip to China to take charge of the institution, but wants to wait for Lula to attend a formal ceremony
the former president Dilma Rousseff (PT) will assume command of the Banco dos Brics this week, even without the presence of the president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT). The formal inauguration ceremony, however, will take place when the Chief Executive reschedules his trip to China.
Dilma would be sworn in as president of the NDB (New Development Bank) on Wednesday (29.Mar.2023) with the presence of Lula, in Shanghai. Faced with the cancellation of the PT official visit, the former president will begin her work this week before formally taking office.
Initially, Lula was going to leave for China on Saturday, but on Thursday (23.Mar.2023) he was diagnosed with bacterial and viral bronchopneumonia due to Influenza A. At first, the government postponed his departure to Sunday (26 .mar.2023), but on Saturday afternoon he announced the cancellation of the diplomatic visit.
Before, Dilma would go to China on the “Aerolula”, the main plane for transporting the President of the Republic. Now, he must board a commercial flight or catch a ride on the Presidency’s Airbus 330, which must pick up the members of the team in charge of planning the details of the trip who are already in China.
Lula’s trip to China should be rescheduled for the 1st half of this year, possibly in May, but there is still no confirmation.
