The Detroit Motor Show of 1992 it had opened with Lee Iacocca talking about the possibility of Chrysler going bankrupt within five years, without a serious recovery plan. With these premises, but with an overall sound economy, the NAIAS opened with the entry into the car firmament of various production models and some important concept cars. We have collected ten who even then astonished by the daring solutions or by the ambition for success.
The first car on the list, and on the cover, is the Jeep Grand Cherokee. The Chrysler group had thought of an alternative to the Cherokee XJ and the Wagoneer. In the end, a car of intermediate size was chosen between the two off-roaders, placing them side by side rather than replacing them. Born with the identification code ZJ, it was presented on January 7, 1992 in Detroit with a 4-liter engine of 190 HP or with a 5.2-liter V8 AMC that produced about 220 horsepower. It was a great success. The market entry of the Honda Civic CRX with its third generation. The Del Sol is also known for its presence in the popular Gran Turismo video game, and for its small sports size. It also had space Mercedes, with the S600 Coupé, and the non-exalting was launched Dodge Intrepid.
Among the concept cars, there were several surprises. Ghia designed the electric model for Ford Connecta. It was a minivan with rounded shapes and a very small front in relation to the rest of the car. It had the particularity of an internal ‘living room’ with the rows behind the passengers (six seats in all) facing face to face. Another oddity, in this case not exactly good-looking, was a round rear window. There Pontiac Salsa, on the other hand, he had the jaunty air typical of Targa bodies. But on closer inspection, it was an inspiration in terms of overall design for the future Opel Tigra. There Lincoln Marque X instead it got an anonymous body except for the front, and inside you can see a hint of PT Cruiser (which is considered one of the least fascinating cars in history).
Also there Buick Scepter it did not have a particular following, in particular for the V-shaped front which was not exciting and for the general lack of charm. The red one is more interesting Hyundai HCD-I: some design elements were taken over for the following (1996) Hyundai Coupé. Finally, Chevrolet presented the prototype Corvette Stingray III. This Vette did not have an impact on the subsequent series, but is still to be considered as a link between the C4 and C5.
