Representative Júlia Zanatta (PL-SC) compared this Wednesday, 24th, Santa Catarina and Maranhão, stating that the northeastern state “has more people on Bolsa Família than with formal employment contracts”. The statement took place during a session of the Chamber's Constitution, Justice and Citizenship Committee (CCJ), which approved a complementary bill that authorizes the States and the Federal District to legislate on the possession and carrying of firearms.
Under the argument that States need to have more autonomy to legislate because “Brazil is a country of continental size and there is no way to centralize more power in Brasília”, the deputy allied with former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) said that having a single legislation “is not democratic”. “There’s no way we can all be the same. Santa Catarina is not the same as Maranhão, for example”, declared the parliamentarian.
Stating that the Southern State “works”, Júlia Zanatta said that in Santa Catarina “there are more people with formal employment contracts than on Bolsa Família, unlike in Maranhão”. After her speech, the deputy said that she needed to “be careful” because, “the other day, the Minister of Communication (Juscelino Filho) said that the phrase was xenophobic”.
According to the parliamentarian, “now telling the truth has become a crime”. Addressing other deputies, she said: “That’s why you want to censor, right? Because you can’t handle the truth.”
In the session in which the deputy gave the speech, the collegiate approved the proposal of the president of the CCJ, deputy Caroline de Toni (PL-SC), on firearms, by 34 votes to 30. Now, the text goes to the plenary, where it needs at least 257 votes in favor to be approved. While opposition parliamentarians defend the project and the autonomy of the States, the government supporters continue to question the constitutionality of the proposal.
