A group of 30 congressmen from the far left of the Democratic Party sent a letter to US President Joe Biden, asking for negotiations to end the war in Ukraine, which turned eight months ago this Monday (24).
In the document, lawmakers praised Biden for providing military, economic and humanitarian support to Ukraine without the United States having entered the war directly. But they argued that “it is in the interests of Ukraine, the United States and the world to avoid a protracted conflict.”
“For this reason, we ask that you combine the military and economic support that the United States has provided to Ukraine with a proactive diplomatic impulse, redoubling efforts to seek a realistic condition for a ceasefire,” the congressmen wrote.
The lawmakers pointed out that these diplomatic efforts should include “initiating direct talks with Russia, exploring prospects for a new European security agreement acceptable to all parties, which will allow for a sovereign and independent Ukraine, and, in coordination with our Ukrainian partners , seek a speedy end to the conflict, and reiterate that goal as the top priority of the United States.”
On Monday, General Mark Milley, chief of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, spoke with his Russian counterpart, General Valery Gerasimov.
According to Colonel Dave Butler, a spokesman for the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, the two generals “discussed several important security-related issues and agreed to keep the lines of communication open. As per the previous line of conduct, the specific details of the conversation will be kept confidential.”
