Sargeant at risk: Schumacher among the candidates
Among the drivers most at risk in view of next season, at least judging by the results obtained and the market rumors, there is Logan Sargeant. The American, making his Formula 1 debut this year with the Williams, has not yet won any championship points, and his position in the British team is becoming increasingly critical despite the closeness shown by the team. If there is no reconfirmation for the 2024the names of several riders who could replace the 22-year-old have been mentioned, and among these the name of Mick Schumacher.
A remote possibility
The German, absent from the starting grid after failing to be reappointed at Haas at the end of last year, today holds the role of third driver in Mercedesalso participating in tests and simulator sessions both in McLaren that in Williams, both powered by the German company. As reported by F1 Insiderthe Mercedes Team Principal, Toto Wolff, would have urged his former Chief Strategist James Vowles (Williams Team Principal from this year) to favor Schumacher’s possible promotion, however rejected by the British engineer due to the less than encouraging data detected on the simulator.
Danner as Team Principal
An answer that is not surprising at all Christian Danner, former German pilot. Interviewed by sport.dethe 49-year-old was in fact rather severe on his young compatriot, even more so if he had to evaluate the profile of Michael’s son as Team Principal: “In the two years he drove in Formula 1, Mick left quite an impression on the Team Principals: ‘Well, actually we don’t need him’ – he has declared – obviously this has long-term consequences. There is no Team Principal who would have much faith in him now“.
The vote for Lawson
In this way, Danner believes that the chances of seeing Schumacher in the role of official driver are reduced to a minimum, unlike Liam Lawson. Even for the German, in fact, he would be the ideal candidate to replace Sargeant should the latter not be reconfirmed. However, as the current AlphaTauri driver reiterated in recent days, the 21-year-old denied such a hypothesis: “Lawson now also drives a rather slow car like the AlphaTauri – he continued – and what did he do? He came out of the situation absolutely brilliantly, he was faster than the regular driver, he scored points and performed well in his first Grands Prix. I believe Williams is the optimal solution until Sergio Perez is fired from Red Bull. He drives for Williams for a year and then goes to Red Bull.”
