The Spanish brand makes its Formula E debut alongside the company, which did not participate in the 2021-22 season due to Audi’s exit from the electric single-seater category. In recent years, Cupra has directed most of its racing projects into the electric sector, developing the world’s first 100% electric racing car, better known as the e-Racer, used in the FIA ETCR.
It is in this championship that the team was proclaimed overall champion for the second time, successfully continuing its presence in the difficult and complicated world of electric racing. Entry into Formula E therefore represents a step forward for Cupra’s interests at the moment, as this single-seater category is undoubtedly the most recognized competition in the world in terms of electric car racing.
The drivers defending the ABT Cupra colors in their first Formula E season will be Dutch Robin Frijns and Swiss Nico Müller, who had already been signed before the partnership was made public. Mahindra Racing will supply the power units for the team.

“Racing is at the heart of Cupra’s DNA and with Cupra we go to win – said Wayne Griffiths, CEO of Cupra – It’s the right time to take a further leap in quality and become part of the biggest electric motor competition in the world , and I can’t wait to see the ABT Cupra Formula E team racing in the heart of some of the world’s most iconic cities.”
“Formula E is a unique motorsports platform for the world’s leading automakers to create excitement and continue to demonstrate that electric motorsport is not boring, but goes hand in hand with extreme performance,” added Griffiths.
Cupra and ABT have previously collaborated in Extreme E and both brands are pioneers in the world of electric racing. ABT has reached the top of Formula E, having won the drivers’ championship in 2017-18 and the constructors’ championship in the 2016-17 season, a success it hopes to repeat with Cupra.
