First season – Episode 3
The mediocrity of the first two episodes of the series has made his intentions clear. The third installment confirms the goal of exploiting the formula to the fullest without surprises. Perhaps this is the secret of its success
Octopus as a pet. If we have fully internalized the fan phenomenon and settle for seeing how the celebration evolves, buried by the references from the first minute, accepting that it is more than usual, the ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ series slightly recovers flight in the third installment of its first season, but it’s not the charm. It continues to have serious problems, inexplicable in a great production of its characteristics, relieved only if we assume the condition of a parishioner as a spectator before the popular franchise. After commenting in a previous article on the start of the spin-off, with a double premiere chapter, we entered the spoiler-free zone, in order to dissect with greater substance one of the most anticipated releases of the season. No need to save flashy information anymore. If you’ve made it this far as a reader, you take responsibility for some of the details being gutted if you haven’t yet devoured the last plate of the ‘Star Wars’ feast. Gluttony commands and there is a danger of embarrassment.
Anakin Skywalker is alive! With this phrase, drilling Obi-Wan’s head, good old Ben, the second episode of the series at hand ended on a high, after the exhibition of parkour by the Third Sister, capable of jumping from building to building like a panther in order to offer a show. His lightsaber wipes out the Grand Inquisitor, the Jedi hunter after the Great Purge. A character with a presence in the universe of the saga, especially in the animated series ‘Star Wars: Rebels’, which here is reduced in seconds to the anecdotal. The figure of Lord Vader, with his iconic potential, brings energy to ‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’, appealing to nostalgia without fuss. ‘Episode III: Revenge of the Sith’ ended with the birth of the lofty villain, emulating Frankenstein, an extreme sensation for addicts of George Lucas’s soap opera that is taken up without blushing in this new accommodating production. The high is evident, the pattern is fulfilled, fueling the portrait of how terribly cruel Darth Vader is. The problem comes when the sabers of the staunch enemies are crossed. The blue light against the red, which bipartisanship. So we endorse that there is a serious stumble with the action scenes. The description of the spaces when it comes to generating tension, when there is a confrontation or duel, is null (also visible in the last section of the story, which gives way to the cliffhanger, where does Reva come from?). The director, Deborah Chow, also a producer, has not thought of reviewing the best westerns, as in ‘The Mandalorian’, or hiring, failing that, a second solvent unit. She is extremely shocked that a project linked to ‘Star Wars’, with a large budget, limps in this section.
‘Obi-Wan Kenobi’ improves its tone in this latest installment, Ewan McGregor is great in his role, he is still the best of a lot whose script seems to be made with square and bevel. It puts the skid from ‘The Book of Bobba Fett’ behind, but it has several water leaks that urgently need to be covered. The relationship between the Jedi and little Princess Leia fits the formula well. The precocious actress fulfills the file better, by not having to move too much within the shot -the ridiculous chase through the forest of her kidnapping, already viralized, bordered on the amateur-. The routine twists, low risk but effective, stand out when they connect with the childhood of the audience. The deal with the public is what it is, rather a closed pact. The confrontation between Obi-Wan and his great antagonist, Darth Vader, is what matters. It is the engine of everything that happens, apart from the fact that some new characters are introduced – well Indira Varma as a rebel with a cause – and some subplots are developed. It seems that the watchword is to accommodate and not bother… the usual fans? We will see how the story unfolds, whose suspense is distorted by being aware that Ben Kenobi does not disappear until ‘Star Wars’, excuse me, and Leia survives all tragedy until the last trilogy released in space-time. Everything that happens to them will have a solution, so it had better be interesting.
