Australasia has begun a police investigation into a suspected rape that is stirring up the country’s cricket circles.
Member of the Australian under-19 national team in the 1980s Jamie Mitchell has reported being raped on a national team tour in India and Sri Lanka.
“We commend Mitchell for being open to his experiences. The Australian Cricket Association is assisting police in the investigation. We have zero tolerance for all forms of harassment, ”the country’s cricket federation said in a statement.
Mitchell spoke of the rape in an interview with Australian broadcaster ABC on Sunday. He said the rapist was the leader of the team. According to Mitchell, the rape took place on the last night of the tour in Colombo, Sri Lanka in 1985.
“The tour was supposed to be the highlight of my cricket career, but instead it has caused many years of trauma. Now the Australian Cricket Association has a seam to stand out by tackling the issue and doing the right thing, ”Mitchell commented in a statement sent by his lawyers.
A member of the team named rapist on a TV broadcast denied guilt.
Former captain of the Australian national team Greg Chappell said he was shocked by Mitchell’s revelation. Chappell, who was the national team chooser in the mid-1980s, hopes the Australian Cricket Association will respect the people involved in its follow-up and not focus on protecting the association.
