The Brazilian Council of Ophthalmology (CBO) launched a website aimed at the Brazilian population defending the importance of looking for qualified professionals in case of need for help or suspicions associated with vision.
The website www.emdefesadaophthalmologia.com.br brings alerts about false or distorted information circulating on the internet, on social networks or on websites and highlights the need to seek guidance on the subject from trained professionals and reliable sources.
The page emphasizes that eye care can only be done by ophthalmologists, professionals trained in medicine and who specialize in this area.
The information considers that opticians often offer procedures popularly known as “eye exams”, but this generally occurs in connection with the purchase of eyeglasses at the establishment.
This type of “tied sale”, the council emphasizes, is illegal and must be denounced. THE CBO institutional website. Opticians also cannot sell prescription lenses without a doctor’s prescription.
When people and commercial establishments undertake behaviors that can only be done by law by a doctor, a practice called “illegal exercise of medicine” occurs, a crime provided for in the Penal Code.
This is also valid, informs the website, in the case of optometrists. These professionals have higher education, but are not doctors and cannot assume the condition or act as one under penalty of illegal practice.
Optometrists can detect vision disorders or eye ailments and prescribe eyeglasses and lenses, but cannot treat and operate on eye-related illnesses. They act as support for ophthalmologists in primary care.
