Seven years after his last career podium, more precisely at the Hungarian GP 2014, the third place obtained by Fernando Alonso in Qatar he rekindled the spotlight on the two-time Spanish world champion, who returned to Formula 1 this season with theAlpine, at forty years of age, after the stop decided at the end of the 2018 championship. After the smiles and the joy of a return to the top three, the Asturian confessed that he also wants to reach the goal of the world title in 2022 , which would constitute his third seal after those he won consecutively in 2005 and 2006.
Moreover, it was precisely at that time that Red Bull’s adventure in the top flight began, then piloted by the Scotsman David Coulthard. The latter, who therefore faced Alonso on the track in those early 2000s, expressed his opinion to Channel 4 on the qualities of the former Ferrari driver, which remained intact even after his temporary abandonment from F1 and demonstrated both in Losail and in other tests on the calendar; above all, that staged in Hungary, where he helped his teammate Esteban Ocon to win his first career victory: “It’s good for Formula 1 – said the former McLaren driver – know that Fernando still has the same speed and the same hunger“.
Specifically, the 2001 vice-world champion commented on the performance of the Spaniard in Qatar, magnified by the difficulties encountered by the Alpine throughout the season: “The car arrived in Losail with a level of competitiveness that was not up to par – he added – I’m sure the team hadn’t changed anything in terms of primary components. The result was realized only thanks to the particular style of the car, which adapted to a smoother and faster circuit. So, this placement will take some of the pressure off the team. However, if we exclude Ocon’s success in Budapest this season however it was turbulent for the Alpine“.
