CharINone of the most important companies in the sector of electric refillspresented to theEVS35 from Oslo, Norwaythe charging connector quick Megawatt Charging System (MCS) for electric vehicles with large batteries such as heavy vehicles.
This will become one standard for the future of heavy commercial vehicles. The design of the prototype of the plug which should allow a charging capacity of up to 3.75 MW.
Megawatt Charging System, how is the ULTRA fast charging connector made?
The drawing, long kept secret by CharINis triangular, with the tip pointing down. In the two upper corners are the large sockets for i two DC chargers. The other smaller ones for grounding and communication are placed in the center and at the bottom. Since it is still a prototype, the final design will not be published until 2024as mentioned above.
Megawatt Charging System, the characteristics
According to the CharIN website, the MCS is designed for a maximum current of up to 1,250 V in DC, which means a potential of 3,750 kW peak power. This is an order of magnitude larger than the 350-500 kW connector CCS Combowhich was used as the basis for the development of MCS.
The technical characteristics of the fast charging socket are also listed on the CharIN website:
- Single conductive plug
- Max 1,250 times 3,000 amps (CC)
- PLC + ISO / IEC 15118
- Touch safe (UL2251)
- Adheres to OSHA and ADA standards
- FCC Class A EMI
- Located on the left side of the vehicle, approximately at hip height
- Ability to be automated
- UL certified (NRTL)
- IT security
- V2X (bidirectional)
It is expected that after launch, the MCS will also have the option of one automatic connection. Charging from CCS chargers will likely be possible via a suitable adapter.
CharIN states that the MCS “It is based on globally aligned requirements with technical specifications determined in such a way that a world standard can be provided.”
The MCS is under development for about four yearswhen the company presented the idea to first CharIN North America conference in 2018. It has now been shown that a prototype of the MCS on an Alpitronic loader and an electric truck Scania was able to receive more than 1 MW of power.
Megawatt Charging System, where will it be placed on the vehicles?
Unlike electric cars, the location of the charging socket on heavy vehicles it is standardized for MCS. It will be placed on the left side of the vehicle, in an area between two and 4.80 meters behind the bumper. This position should simplify the positioning of any loads on board.
