Rodrigo Constain, A 68-year-old Colombian is recovering from injuries to his body after being bitten by a crocodile in Everglades National Park, Florida, United States.
Based on the report from the National Park Service, the emergency was responded to around 4:43 pm on March 10 when the man was on a sailboat that overturned in a basin. “He was trying to swim to shore with his boat and was seen sinking underwater“said the authority.
Park rangers rescued him and showed that he had lacerations on his leg, which required his transfer by helicopter to a hospital: “He was stable.”
The story of a Colombian who survived a crocodile bite
In the recovery stage, Constain was grateful for being alive. “It's a story that probably couldn't be told,” he told the local channel. NBC.
“When I was swimming I felt like something had my leg. I didn't feel any pain, nothing. I didn't know what was holding me back. It submerged me in the water,” he added.
In a matter of seconds, according to his story, he grabbed the animal with his hands: “I grabbed his head and tried to open his jaw so he would let me go. He opened it, I didn't have to use much force.”
At that moment, the Colombian did not imagine that it was a crocodile. If he had identified him instantly, he “would have panicked, he would have tried to get away faster, causing more injuries.”
When the crocodile released him, he swam to the shore, while relief agencies arrived. There he felt the deep pain and realized that his leg was bloody.
“There is only one reason why I am here: it is God. If you are not with God, I would not be here. He was with me all the time. I was not afraid, because when you believe in God, you are not afraid,” he said.
Constain's family developed a fundraiser and managed to receive 10 thousand dollars (40 million pesos) to cover medical expenses: “He faces a long road to recovery, especially with the uncertainty of when he will be able to regain full mobility in his left leg and get back to work.”
The National Park Service clarified to the public that the place is “safe to visit” and “swimming in the canals, ponds, freshwater lakes and piers” is prohibited.
“Park rangers and biologists continue to investigate the incident and monitor the suspected crocodile, which is easily identifiable. The American alligator is a federally threatened species.“said the authority.
