Coldiretti, 263 cases of Apulian tarocco oil and false Altamura lentils. Scams on Italian specialties travel (also) on the web
Among the scams on culinary products Made in Italy unmasked on web platforms, they are in everything 263 the fake oils found online. This is what the analysis of the Coldiretti Puglia, on the basis of the report by the Italian Ministry of Agriculture, published on the occasion of the signing of the agreement between the Italian Government and Amazon to guarantee the protection and promotion of certified quality agri-food on the online platform. The checks made it possible to find out on the web 177 cases of scams with the wording ‘Puglia oil’, 52 Dauno (extra virgin olive oil) and 34 Terra di Bari (extra virgin olive oil), in addition to 15 cases of false Altamura lentils, in which the community indications are also recalled.
The intensification of controls – reports Coldiretti – last year made it possible to remove as many as 24 counterfeit Italian references in food, whose diffusion was also favored by the difficulties caused by the pandemic. “The fraud in the agri-food sector they also travel on the web with agropirates that exploit the Italian sounding of products protected by Community trademarks to sell fake Apulian extra virgin olive oil, with inestimable damage in terms of unfair competition and image for the authentic Made in Puglia ”, he complains Savino Muraglia, president of Coldiretti Puglia.
“The Italian sounding business also exploits the web to sell products that have nothing to do with the extraordinary agri-food heritage under attack from international agro-piracy. Exports of tricolor agri-food products could triple if there were a stop to international food counterfeiting, when almost two out of three ‘Italian-type’ food products are still fake ”, Muraglia adds.
