Despite the fact that there is no atmospheric V8 in the front, we really want this Citroën Berlingo 2CV Fourgonnette.
When we looked at the new BMW XM and this Citroen Berlingo, we wondered: isn’t it just time to ‘stop’ developing design? In principle, cars don’t get any nicer. Of course, people will switch to a new model because it is better (or more importantly: newer). But not so much because the car is more beautiful.
All the beautiful cars to be already designed. So why aren’t all brands going to do it like this Fourgonette? That means a new car with design for people who want something new and then a second option where you can choose a retro coach.
That’s what she’s at Caselanic to do. The basis of this commercial vehicle is the Citroen Berlingo. It’s obvious where the inspiration for this device comes today. Ribbed vans! In this case the 2CV Fourgonnette.
Features Citroën Berlingo 2CV Fourgonnette
The appearance is a kind of combination of the Citroën 2CV and the HY. In both cases a legendary Citroën. The great thing is that Citroën also likes what they do with Caselanic (who builds the fiberglass panels). The kits are built under license.
In this case, the kit was designed by David Obendorfer. That’s even harder than it looks. You don’t have to admit all retro elements, it also has to fit the ‘hardpoints’ of the car. All electronics, door frames, hinges and the like must be in the same location.
And we have to say: David Obendorfer, our compliments! The end result is almost perfect. It’s obviously retro, but still fresh looking. The Berlingo is also (apparently) very suitable for a conversion like this you would think. That does not appear to be the case.
According to Obendorfer, it was a very difficult challenge. The original has a very small front overhang, a longer hood and a relatively larger square cabin. It was still a job to calibrate it on a 2CV Fourgonnette.
Body kit availability
The ribbing is a great detail. You can see them on the hood, the bottom of the doors and on the rest of the side. At the time, the ribs were used to increase stiffness. Coincidentally, this resulted in an iconic design.
Anyone who sees a rib cage has to think of thick fries with slightly sour full-fat mayonnaise. Those ridges are not necessary now. It only serves to look cool. And to arouse the lust for fries. These kinds of cars are perfect for making a chip shop.
You can order the kit for every possible Berlingo. So also the passenger version or the electric version. From October 1, Caselani will be taking orders for people who want a Citroen Berlingo 2CV Fourgonnotte. It is not the first time that Caselani has made a retro body kit for a Citroën commercial vehicle. The Type H and Type HG have already passed by.
