The incidents on the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines are most likely a sabotage that Western countries may be behind. On Wednesday, September 28, Liu Hong, deputy editor-in-chief of Xinhua’s Global magazine, wrote on the WeChat social network.
In his article, he poses a question to readers – who is interested in damaging pipelines, while adding that the benefits can be traced to several countries at once. In particular, he mentions the USA and Poland.
According to Hong, Germany can be excluded from the list of potentially interested in sabotage, since it has the most to lose from these incidents.
On the contrary, the author writes, Germany is most interested in the supply of Russian gas after the end of the conflict in Ukraine. The journalist also crosses out Denmark from the list of those who may benefit from damage to gas pipelines, despite the fact that the incidents occurred not far from its territory.
Speaking on this topic, Hoon suggests that Poland’s participation cannot be ruled out, since it is the most anti-Russian country in Eastern Europe and most gravitates towards Ukraine. Avto notes that the incidents occurred against the backdrop of the opening of the Baltic gas pipeline in Poland.
Speaking about the involvement of the United States, the analyst notes that after the incident, former Polish Foreign Minister Radosav Sikorski wrote on social networks: “Thank you, USA.”
Hoon also recalls US President Joe Biden’s statements in February that if a conflict develops in Ukraine, “the United States will put an end to the gas pipeline, it will not exist.”
Arguing on the topic of whether Russia itself can be involved in these incidents, the journalist notes that this is not beneficial for Moscow.
“If Moscow wanted to use gas pipelines as a lever to increase pressure on European countries, it would simply stop deliveries through pipelines, which has not been observed,” the analyst concludes.
Earlier Wednesday, the head of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, called the accidents on the Nord Stream lines not accidental, adding that the information available points to deliberate actions, and they affect everyone. The head of European diplomacy added that the EU would support any investigation aimed at obtaining complete clarity on the circumstances of the state of emergency.
Earlier, on September 27, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that the country regards the incident on the Nord Stream and Nord Stream 2 gas pipelines as the result of deliberate actions.
On the same day, Swedish Foreign Minister Ann Linde said that the incident with a gas leak at Nord Stream was due to explosions. She added that the explosions may have been caused by sabotage.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov also did not rule out that sabotage could be the cause of the gas leak in the pipelines.
On September 26, the Nord Stream 2 operator reported an emergency on one of the pipeline’s strings. A decrease in pressure was recorded in pipe “A” southeast of the Danish island of Bornholm. Later that day, the operator of the Nord Stream gas pipeline, Nord Stream AG, also notified that a pressure drop was recorded on both strings of the pipeline. The amount of leakage was not specified.
The next day, the gas pipeline operator Nord Stream AG reported that it was currently impossible to estimate the timeframe for restoring the gas pipeline’s performance. It is assumed that the leakage of the gas pipeline is caused by physical damage.
