Today, Sunday, China warned of the expansion of a new outbreak of the emerging Corona virus.
A health official said the latest outbreak of the virus was likely to spread further, while authorities urged all provinces to strengthen surveillance and called for less cross-provincial travel.
China has largely contained the virus, but is determined to eliminate any sporadic local outbreaks, especially ahead of the 2022 Winter Olympics in February.
Over the past week, more than 100 local transmissions were confirmed across 11 regional areas, with most of them linked to thirteen different tourist groups.
Mi Feng, a spokesman for the National Health Commission, told reporters, today, Sunday, that there is an increased risk of a widening of the outbreak due to “seasonal factors.”
Wu Liangyu, deputy head of the commission, said that the current outbreak is caused by the highly contagious “delta” strain, adding that tracing operations showed that its source is different from a previous outbreak, noting that the new cases were transmitted from a new source from abroad.
The authorities have prevented travel agencies from arranging trips across provinces that include areas with a high risk of infection with the virus, and have suspended nationwide some travel services linking multiple tourist destinations.
The capital, Beijing, said it would impose severe restrictions on travel to it from provinces with even one case.
