Any official US ties to the Taiwan administration are unacceptable to China. This statement was made on August 25 by the press secretary of the Chinese Embassy in Washington, Liu Pengyu.
“China strongly opposes any kind of official ties between the United States and the Taiwan region,” the diplomat said in an interview with TASS.
Liu Pengyu emphasized that this visit proves the US intention to aggravate the confrontation with China and interfere in its internal affairs, after which he warned that in response to these provocations, Beijing will take decisive retaliatory measures to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
On August 25, Taiwan’s Central News Agency reported that a delegation from the United States would arrive on the island late that evening. As specified, the American parliamentarians should arrive at the Songshan airport on a military plane, and the next morning meet with Taiwan’s chief of staff Tsai Ing-wen.
On August 21, Indiana Governor Eric Holcomb spoke about his trip to Taiwan. He met with Director General of the Department of North American Affairs of the Foreign Ministry of the country Douglas Hsu.
Prior to this, a delegation from the US Congress arrived in Taiwan on August 14, where the next day they met with Chief of Staff Tsai Ing-wen.
On Aug. 12, the White House said the US was developing an “ambitious” roadmap to develop trade relations with Taiwan.
The situation around Taiwan escalated after Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi arrived at the Taipei airport on August 2, despite China’s urgent request to refrain from this step. She called her visit “a testament to the United States’ commitment to supporting Taiwanese democracy.” On NBC on August 9, she said the visit was “absolutely” worth it.
On August 7, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called it a mistake for the United States to interfere in China’s internal affairs. At the same time, on August 8, US Deputy Secretary of Defense for Political Affairs Colin Kahl said that Washington does not support Taiwan’s movement towards independence.
