On Saturday, the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s website published a summary of the meeting held on Friday between Wang and his Iranian counterpart in Wuxi, Jiangsu Province.
During his visit, the Iranian foreign minister is scheduled to announce the inauguration of a 25-year cooperation agreement between Tehran and Beijing.
Wang said the United States bears primary responsibility for the continued difficulties with Iran after its unilateral withdrawal from the nuclear deal in 2018.
He stressed that China firmly supports the resumption of negotiations on the nuclear deal, but he made it clear that China firmly opposes illegal unilateral sanctions against Iran, political manipulation on issues including human rights and interference in the internal affairs of Iran and other countries in the region.
After the United States withdrew from the nuclear deal, it reimposed sanctions that severely damaged the Iranian economy, and said the terms of the agreement were not sufficient to limit Iran’s nuclear activities, ballistic missile program and regional influence.
The United States and Iran are in indirect talks about the possibility of reaching a compromise to renew the agreement and allay fears of a wider war in the Middle East.
A source close to the negotiations said on Friday that many issues are still unresolved.
