The minister spokesperson for the Government of Chile, Camila Vallejo, predicted this Friday that the “total extinction” of the devastating fires that shake the center south of Chile for a week, and that they have burned nearly 360,000 hectares, it will not be achieved before the first half of March.

“The fires they may be controlled, but not extinct. (…) The important thing now is to have all the capabilities to control the fires, so that they do not continue to spread, and then comes the extinction process so that they do not reactivate“, expressed the spokesperson for the Chilean executive before the media.
Vallejo assured that, beyond the direct combat of the fire, “the important thing is that new fires are not generated”, since, in addition to the center-south of the country that has been affected by the flames, the central regions are on high alert due to the potential for large forest fires.

The minister called on the public not to take any action that could generate new outbreaks: “Climate change creates favorable conditions for a fire to spread, but the main origin of the fires is, unfortunately, human action“, he remarked.

The fires, which are a week old and still have not been controlled, have already caused the death of 24 peoplerazed more than 1,250 homes and caused more than 5,500 victims in the regions of Ñuble, Biobío, La Araucanía and Maule.
The lack of means -in Chile the fire brigade is not professional-, the bad management of the forests and the adverse weather conditions have accelerated the tragedythe most serious of its nature in the country.
