After the situation that is out of proportion and that is causing trouble on the border between Mexico and the United States, the government of President Joe Biden seems to be making drastic decisions.
It was learned that the Biden administration is preparing a set of agreements and measures that will tighten the filter that is used today to stop migration. In the case of Colombians, EL TIEMPO learned what the specific rules would be.
The plan contemplates that the deportations would be made through the figure of “accelerated removal” (or expedite removal) that currently contemplates Title 8 of the US law.
It is also studied that people who are arrested and denied asylum for having violated these rules, would be banned for at least 5 or 10 years to try again.
Thus, it is proposed that there will be massive deportations to Mexico of non-Mexican citizens, in an agreement that is yet to be closed.

According to migration statistics, some 1,500 Colombians are returned directly to Colombia thanks to an agreement under title 42 and another large percentage ends up staying in the United States, either in a detention center or released on bail while the process is in progress.

With the changes, according to sources consulted by EL TIEMPO, Colombians could be deported en masse to Mexico. In addition, the option that allows Colombians, once in that country, to request asylum would be knocked down. This scenario would only be viable for those who request this process from their country of origin and continue with this administrative procedure, with the endorsement of the United States.
On the other hand, the ambassador in WashingtonLuis Gilberto Murillohas been working with the authorities of that country to grant immigration relief to undocumented Colombians.

There are also working groups to discuss the possibility of eliminating the tourist and business visa requirement for compatriots.
