Two children and a woman were injured in a rocket attack on Baghdad’s high-security Green Zone. The missiles landed near the US embassy and a school, according to Iraqi security sources.
In a Facebook post, the embassy attributed the attack to “terrorist groups seeking to undermine Iraq’s security, sovereignty and international relations.” So far, no one has claimed responsibility for the attack.
In recent months, several rocket attacks have been carried out on the Green Zone in Baghdad or on other targets. In early January, for example, several drone strikes took place at a base where international troops are located. Anti-aircraft systems then took the unmanned aircraft from the air. In November, a drone loaded with explosives struck the Iraqi prime minister’s official residence. He was unharmed.
Pro-Iranian groups
The attacks are rarely claimed. However, such actions often look at pro-Iranian groups in Iraq. These groups demand that the United States remove all military personnel from the country. The US ended its combat mission in Iraq last year.
There are currently about 2,500 US troops in the country. They train and help the Iraqi army in the fight against the terrorist movement Islamic State (IS). The Netherlands also contributes an amount to the anti-IS coalition in Iraq. For example, Dutch soldiers help with the security of the international airport of Erbil.
