Chelsea was crowned champion of the Club World Cup, after beating Palmeiras of Brazil in the final, 2-1.
The English cast went ahead through Rumelu Lukaku, who at minute 55 opened the account.
The tie came through Raphael Veiga, from a penalty, at minute 64, but in the extension, by way of the penalty, Kai Havertz put the definitive 2.-1.
The dream of the Brazilians vanished just a few minutes from the end, when the Australian referee Chris Beath consulted the VAR for a possible hand inside the area by Luan Garcia that ended up signaling the penalty converted by Havertz.
red was key
In a fateful ending for the Brazilian central defender, Garcia was expelled in stoppage time for a takedown of Havertz when the German striker faced goalkeeper Weberton alone (120+6).
With this victory, Chelsea maintains dominance in Europe in this tournament, which they lost for the last time in 2012, when the English team fell to another Brazilian rival, Corinthians.
Current double champion of the Copa Libertadores, Abel Ferreira’s Palmeiras is left without the dream of inscribing his name in the Club World Cup list of winners, along with Corinthians, Sao Paulo and Inter de Porto Alegre. mcd/rsc AFP
