Caucasus Conflicts broke out again on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, killing at least 15 soldiers

At least Fifteen Armenian soldiers have died in clashes on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, the Armenian Ministry of Defense said Tuesday. In addition, 12 soldiers have been taken prisoner and Armenian troops are withdrawing from their two bases.

Both countries blamed each other for exacerbating the situation. According to Azerbaijan, Armenian troops attacked their positions, while Armenian said Azerbaijani soldiers were trying to break through the border line.

The fighting was worse since last year’s six-week war, which killed about 6,500 people. Armenia had to cede territories it had ruled for decades. The fighting ended in November 2020 with an agreement negotiated by Russia.

Armenia on Tuesday, appealed to its ally Russia, with which it has a defense agreement, for military support. Russia has a military base and peacekeepers in Armenia.

European Council chairman Charles Michel said on Tuesday it had held talks with the leadership of both countries and demanded an immediate ceasefire in the region.

“The EU is committed to working with its partners to resolve tensions over a thriving and stable South Caucasus,” Michel told Twitter.
