The authorities of the Indian reservation where the massacre took place have declared a state of emergency until September
The Royal Canadian Mounted Police yesterday continued the search for the two suspects in the stabbing murder of ten people this Sunday in various places of the James Smith Cree Nation, an Indian reservation in the province of Saskatchewan, in the center of the country. The massacre is among the largest acts of mass violence in Canadian history. The reserve authorities have declared a state of emergency, which will be in effect until September 30.
The police chief of the nearby city of Regina, Evan Bray, assured yesterday that during the night they continued to search “tirelessly” for the two suspects. “We have a new team of investigators and shifts starting today (yesterday) to take on the investigation,” Bray explained in a video posted on Twitter. “We are not going to stop this investigation until we have those two in custody,” he stressed.
The suspects are Damien Sanderson, 31, and Myles Sanderson, 30, who have been wanted since Sunday morning after the stabbing. Up to ten people have died so far as a result of the attack and fifteen more have had to be hospitalized. Photos of the suspects have already been released.
The deputy commissioner of the Canadian Police, Rhonda Blackmore, warned on Sunday that they are armed and dangerous individuals. Additionally, Ella Blackmore noted that while some of the victims were intentionally targeted, others were random. However, so far the researchers have not been able to pinpoint the motive for the attacks, which took place in thirteen locations.
The shock of what happened shook the country. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau called the attacks “horrible and heartbreaking” in a statement. “I am thinking of those who have lost a loved one and those who were injured,” he added.
The magnitude of the tragedy is important in a town where everyone knows each other and is even family. “They were our relatives, friends. Most of us are all related here, so it’s quite difficult, “explained an authority in the area, Calvin Sanderson.
