videoThe much-discussed bus shelter in the Belgian town of Beringen, which recently stood right in front of Jean-Marie and Agnes’s window overnight, was demolished today after all the commotion. “Not a second too soon,” the couple says to HLN†

The bus shelter was placed two weeks ago. Jean-Marie, 63, and his wife Agnes, 60, reacted with disbelief. “They might as well let the bus passengers sit inside with us. We don’t understand how this could have happened. Everyone can see that this isn’t going to work, right?” they said. According to the couple, employees in the street had measured everything several times and suddenly there was a bus shelter in front of their window.
Thomas Vints, the mayor of Beringen, said the installation of the bus shelter had gone according to plan. ,,First the bus shelter would be somewhere else, eventually this location came to the fore. In practice, the outcome turned out to be unfortunate. I understand that no one wants a cubicle like this in front of their home. That is why I reviewed the file and decided to remove the box from there.”

stop post
The company that had placed the bus shelter announced that it would also tear it down again. Instead, there will be a stop post, on which the name of the stop and the line numbers of the buses can be seen. The alderman involved (called an alderman in Belgium) understands the ‘commotion and frustration’. He calls the alternative ‘beneficial for all parties involved’.
Jean-Marie and Agnes are certainly relieved that the bus shelter is gone. “A bus shelter like this is very annoying in itself and you should not forget that vandalism is often involved. They could just break a window of ours here. We don’t think anyone in our country would want to see such a monstrosity in front of his or her home. We don’t think anything like this will ever happen to us again.”
