LONDON (Reuters) – Governments and utilities need ambitious plans for enough battery charger infrastructure to service 130 million electric vehicles by 2034, according to a survey by EY and Eurelectric.
According to the study “Energy sector accelerating electric mobility”, Europe will need 65 million electric vehicle battery chargers – 9 million public and 56 million residential – to handle the expected market growth from 3.3 million million electric vehicles that travel across the continent today.
One in 11 new cars sold in the European Union in 2021 was all-electric, up 63% from 2020.
Europe now has 374,000 public battery charging stations, two-thirds of which are concentrated in five countries – the Netherlands, France, Italy, Germany and the United Kingdom – while some European nations do not have a single charger every 100 kilometers. This “polarization between economies risks destabilizing” electrification, says the survey.
To be able to meet demand, Europe needs to install half a million public chargers a year by 2030 and a million a year after that, said Serge Colle, head of energy and resources at EY.
But the construction of this infrastructure “faces major delays” because of planning and permitting issues, said Eurelectric Secretary General Kristian Ruby.
“We are issuing this warning to politicians at all levels,” Ruby said. “If we want to go after that (recharge infrastructure) then we need permission to go forward.”
In addition, increased sales of electric vehicles will increase demand for electricity in Europe by 11% a year, according to the study.
To mitigate the risks of this growth for local power grids, the study recommends supporting alternative solutions such as offering incentives for electric vehicle owners to recharge during off-peak hours, something that could reduce peaks in energy demand by 21%. .
