There were more than 60 hours of fire; São Paulo City Hall assesses that there is a risk of collapse
The demolition of the burned building in downtown São Paulo begins this Saturday (16.Jul.2022) by the security part. Sidings and nets will be installed to cover the entire building. Afterwards, there will be on-site cleaning and shoring of the floors.
Once these steps are completed, inspections will be carried out on the structural elements –such as slabs, beams and pillars– to determine how the demolition will be carried out and whether it will be total or partial.
The fire started on Sunday (July 10), in a 10-story building at Rua Comendador Abdo Schahin, nº 80, in downtown São Paulo. Then the fire spread to 3 other properties on Rua 25 de Março.
The fire was extinguished on Wednesday (13.Jul). There were more than 60 hours of fire. According to the city hall of the capital, there is a risk of collapse and, therefore, the demolition of the building is necessary.
The Municipal Attorney General’s Office considered going to court to obtain authorization for the implosion, but the condominium responsible for the building approved the demolition proposal, speeding up the process.
The building has around 78 commercial rooms. Part of them were used as a warehouse for stocking merchandise from stores in the region. The other 3 buildings affected by the fire are being evaluated to see if there is a risk of collapse. Police are still investigating the causes and possible responsibility for the fire.
