After a marathon battle between the British House of Lords (House of Lords) and the House of Commons (House of Commons) that lasted well into the night, a law has been passed in the United Kingdom that makes it possible to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda. The British government's controversial plans have been approved more than two years after it was first proposed by then Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
Migrants who dare to travel by boat from France to the United Kingdom are put on a plane to Rwanda. The law is intended to deter migrants so much that they no longer cross. In exchange for taking in the asylum seekers, Rwanda will receive the equivalent of approximately 433 million euros, and another 175,000 euros per asylum seeker who actually comes across.
The conservative government has been trying to get the law passed for years, but implementation has been repeatedly delayed. An earlier version of the law was blocked by the judge, because Rwanda was not a safe country. But the government of Prime Minister Rishi Sunak came up with a new bill, which determines that Rwanda is safe. According to Sunak, the first flights will depart within ten to twelve weeks.
