BRASILIA (Reuters) – Brazil recorded 140,234 new cases of Covid-19 on Saturday, reaching a total of 27,425,743 infections, according to data released by the Ministry of Health.
The country also recorded 896 new deaths from the coronavirus, bringing the total number of deaths caused by the disease to 638,048.
The new wave of the pandemic in Brazil is due to the expansion of the Ômicron variant. But the advance of vaccination and the apparent lower lethality of Ômicron have kept the number of deaths at lower levels compared to the peak of the pandemic, when Brazil recorded more than 3,000 deaths per day.
