The Moroccan runner crosses the finish line with a time of 2:15.35 and the winner of the women’s event takes victory after two hours, 48 minutes and 56 seconds
The Murcia marathon once again turned the main streets of the capital into an athletics track this Sunday. The race has become a special event in recent years for runners and in this 2023 edition it was demonstrated again. The Moroccan Boufars Hicham was crowned in the 42 kilometer test after crossing the finish line in first position with a time of 2:15.35. In the women’s race, María Mercedes Pila, a resident of Jarandilla de la Vera (Cáceres) and of Ecuadorian origin, established herself as the champion after crossing the finish line in first place (2:48.56).
Hicham snatched victory in the last kilometer from Kenyan athlete Dominick Kipkirui, who led the event from the start but ended up running second, just seconds behind the champion. In the women’s event, Mercedes Pila clearly prevailed, since her greatest pursuer, Verónica Sánchez, entered almost two minutes later (2: 50.32).
In the 21-kilometre half marathon, Andrés Micó from Villena was the first to cross the finish line and hang the champion’s medal. And it was in the women’s event of this category where the representation of the Region of Murcia found the prize. The Murcian athlete Laura Nicolás took the victory after an hour and 19 minutes of racing.
The 10k, for Finland
The 10 kilometer race was for the Finns Vilho Loukkalahti, with a time of 30:50, and Emilia Siltanen (35:30). In the women’s event, Esther Nicolás from Murcia finished second after 36 minutes and 44 seconds.
The Cardenal Belluga square, where numerous residents gathered, and the Cathedral welcomed the runners with applause in recognition of the physical display that professionals and amateurs gave this Sunday morning in Murcia.
