Ukrainian president says he has called on “partner” countries to adopt sanctions against Russia
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, said this Monday (18.Jul.2022) that the export of grains was the subject of conversation with the president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) this morning. The Ukrainian president’s concern is with an international food crisis because of the conflict with Russia. He also claims to have made an appeal to countries “partners” adopt sanctions against the Russian country. The Brazilian government did not release details about the conversation.
“I had a conversation with the President of Brazil @jairbolsonaro. I reported on the situation at the front. We discussed the importance of resuming grain exports to avoid a Russian-caused global food crisis. I call on all partners to join the sanctions against the aggressor”, said Zelensky on his Twitter profile.
Until the morning of this Monday, Bolsonaro had not commented on the connection with Zelensky. On Sunday (July 18), he stated that the conversation would only be attended by Minister Carlos França (Foreign Affairs) and an interpreter. He also said that binding content cannot “leak out” for being a “state secret”.
The call was a request from Zelensky, according to Bolsonaro. He said on Sunday that he would give his opinion on the Russian-Ukraine war if asked about it.
“I don’t know what he’s going to say to me, Zelensky, right? But I intend to tell him what I think, if he asks me something, where we can collaborate, I will give my opinion, I will only give it if he asks”, stated.
Last week, Bolsonaro declared, without giving details, that he had the “solution” for the war and that he would talk about it with Zelensky. He indicated that the solution could be surrender, mentioning the 1982 conflict between the United Kingdom and Argentina, in which Argentine troops surrendered.
“I’ll give him my opinion on what I think. The solution for the case [guerra]. I know what the case would be like. But I won’t. The solution to the case… How did Argentina’s war with the United Kingdom end in 1982? That’s it”said on Thursday (14.Jul).
Bolsonaro says that the government has adopted a position of “balance” in relation to the conflict in Eastern Europe. The chief executive met with Vladimir Putin, the Russian president, just days before the start of the war. On June 27, Bolsonaro also spoke to Putin by phone.
The government negotiates the import of diesel from Russia. The country is the target of a series of economic sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union.
The conflict between Russia and Ukraine began in February of this year. The production of Brazilian agribusiness and dependence on fertilizers from Russia are the main arguments repeated by Bolsonaro to maintain relations with the Russian country. After the start of the war in Europe, the Chief Executive announced that he would not take sides in the conflict.
In February, Bolsonaro said the war would end “quickly”. According to him, whoever had the most would win the conflict.cannon”, in reference to Russian military power. At the time, he also said he had no reason to talk to Zelensky. “Some want me to talk to Zelensky, the president of Ukraine. I currently have nothing to talk to him about.” said on February 28.
