Secretary Blinken: US will use nuclear weapons only in emergency circumstances
The United States will only consider using its nuclear arsenal in emergency circumstances. About it declared US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, speaking on Monday at the UN Headquarters in New York at a conference of countries participating in the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
Blinken explained that this includes protecting the vital interests of the United States, allies and partners.
As long as nuclear weapons exist, the fundamental role of American nuclear weapons will be to deter nuclear attacks against the United States, our allies and partners.
The United States announced the reduction of nuclear arsenal
In his speech, the US Secretary of State also noted that the United States has significantly reduced its nuclear arsenal over the past 55 years. “The number of nuclear weapons in our arsenals is now almost 90 percent less than at its peak in 1967,” he said. Blinken also pointed out that the nuclear powers, including the US, are moving towards disarmament.
Earlier, Patty-Jane Geller, an analyst at the Heritage Foundation, urged the United States to modernize its deterrence strategy in such a way as to be ready to repel possible nuclear strikes simultaneously from Russia and China. “History teaches us that from time to time, when we stopped building up and even reduced the size of our nuclear forces, our adversaries continued to accumulate them,” she said.
The prospect of nuclear conflict is back in the realm of possibility
Earlier, UN representative Ramesh Rajasingham admitted a nuclear conflict in Ukraine. According to him, the previously unthinkable prospect of a conflict with the use of nuclear weapons has now become quite real.

Later, UN Secretary-General António Guterres said that the previously unimaginable prospect of a nuclear conflict had returned to the realm of the possible. Nuclear weapons offer false promises of security and deterrence, he said. He emphasized that these weapons guarantee “destruction, death and endless brinkmanship.”
Prior to this, former Virginia State Senator Richard Black said that the current policy of the US leadership negatively affects the situation, drawing the whole world into a nuclear war with Russia. In his opinion, America will continue to “spur” the conflict in Ukraine with new arms deliveries, since NATO and the United States do not care at all how many Ukrainians die.

In Russia, talk about the possibility of nuclear war was called unacceptable
In turn, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov pointed out that Russia denies the possibility of using nuclear weapons in Ukraine. He expressed the hope that “the remnants of common sense” will allow the West to refrain from making such decisions. According to the diplomat, there will be no turning back if nuclear weapons are used.
Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin called for preventing the outbreak of a nuclear war. He added that there can be no winners in such a war, and therefore it should never begin. At the same time, Putin stressed, Russia stands for equal security for all members of the world community.
About the cases in which Russia can use nuclear weapons, said the chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko. According to her, Russia can do this as a last resort for protection.
Russia views nuclear weapons only as a deterrent. We clearly and strictly spell out those exceptional cases when it can be applied. And only in response
She also called talk of the possibility of nuclear war unacceptable. According to Matvienko, any sane person and politician understands its consequences. “It’s unimaginable even in the worst nightmare,” she summed up.
At the same time, Deputy Chairman of the Russian Security Council Dmitry Medvedev questioned the need to discuss with the United States the limitation of nuclear potentials.
