A 54-year-old Dutchman was seriously injured during a wild boar hunt in the German state of Rhineland-Palatinate in the night from Friday to Saturday. He was shot at by a 65-year-old compatriot. A preliminary investigation has been opened against him, the police said.
The remarkable hunting accident took place at a hunting ground rented by the oldest Dutchman near Niedersohren, a village in the Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis district between Frankfurt and the Luxembourg border. “The other Dutchman was along as a hunting helper and around midnight during a break lay on his back in the grass looking at the stars,” a police spokesman in Simmern/Hunsrück told this site.
Moments later, a shot is heard and the hunting helper screams in pain. “The hunting tenant mistook him for a wild boar and then pulled the trigger on his gun, he later stated,” the spokesman continued. The victim suffered a graze on his hand, but was nevertheless seriously injured. The attachment of his thumb was completely open.”
Hospital
The gunman drove the hunting helper to a nearby hospital, where he received first aid and the gunman called the police. Agents went to the spot, took statements from both Dutchmen and left with them taking the shotgun and the ammunition. The victim was transferred to a clinic that specializes in hand surgery. There is no danger to life. A preliminary investigation has been opened against the other Dutchman on suspicion of inflicting physical injury. The Public Prosecution Service in Bad Kreuznach must determine on the basis of that investigation whether there was negligence,” said the police spokesman.
The German Criminal Code provides that ‘whoever by negligence inflicts bodily harm on another shall be punished by a term of imprisonment not exceeding three years or a fine.’ Negligence means that the suspect has violated a duty of care that is recognizable to him and that a person has suffered physical injury as a result.
The hunting master of the Rhein-Hunsrück-Kreis district in which the hunting accident took place cannot yet comment on the matter. “We won’t get all the information until Monday because the incident happened over the weekend,” he says.
