The former president of the United States, Bill Clinton, received the Grand Cross of the Order of Boyacá, one of the most important decorations that exist in Colombia, for his “determining support and extraordinary commitment” to the country. In addition to the Grand Cross, Clinton also received the citation ‘200 Years of Diplomatic Relations’a recognition “for his role in strengthening the special relationship between our two countries,” highlighted the Embassy of Colombia.

It should be noted that Bill Clinton, who was president of the North American country between 1993 and 2001, stood out for promoting Plan Colombiaa close political-military alliance between the United States and the country, signed by Clinton and Andrés Pastrana.

What is the Order of Boyacá?
The Order of Boyacá is, together with the National Order of Merit and the Order of San Carlos, the only decorations awarded by the National Government. The one in Boyacá, specifically, is the highest of the three.
It was created in 1819, after a proposal by Simón Bolívar to recognize the efforts and sacrifices of the heroes of Independence. The first time it was delivered was on September 18, 1819.
According to information from the Foreign Ministry, the Order was reestablished in 1919, when the centenary of the Battle of Boyacá was completed.
The National Government awards the Order of Boyacá to recognize those who have stood out for their service to the country.
Those who receive it are “officers who have stood out for their services to the Army or to the country and it is also an honorary distinction for Colombian and foreign nationals and institutions and institutions of friendly nations outstanding in their political, cultural, social, intellectual activities, among others. others”, assured the Foreign Ministry.
