About whether “Better call Saul” is better than “Breaking bad”, we have already talked, so now it’s time to compare their characters. However, far from analyzing all the nuances of the corrupted Saul Goodman and Heisenberg, this time it is almost necessary to talk about their great female co-stars: Skyler White and Kim Wexler.
It’s not news to fans that the vast majority of the audience far prefers the character of the lovely Rhea Seehorn over the wonderful Anna Gunn. However, little is said about why.
For this reason, far from the acting level of both actresses —which has earned each one awards—, in this note we tell you a couple of reasons why many fans prefer Wexler instead of White.
The experience on paper
It’s all part of the script and the way these characters are written. Clearly, when Vince Gilligan created “Breaking Bad” he didn’t have the same experience as when he teamed up with Peter Gould to birth “Better Call Saul.”
In this way, this evolution in the written part has been essential to know that the development of Kim Wexler has had a higher quality than that of Skyler White. And this is reflected in the actions of each throughout both series.
active vs. passive
While Skyler White was always attached to what Walter was doing up to the point of becoming Heisenberg, Kim Wexler was never tied to Jimmy on his way to being Saul Goodman.
‘Sky’ had a family involved: a disabled son and a baby, so any action by Walter affected him directly. This made her a somewhat passive character, although she did do some things to get away from ‘Walt’, she was always conditioned to the danger of her husband.
On the contrary, Kim never had ties with James. Of course, by having a relationship with him, she was also affected by her bad actions, but even so, she always stayed by her side, giving her support. In the series, she forges her own path and solves her problems alone, something that makes her an active character.
The true identity of both
Another key point in both characters is their true identity. Kim Wexler was always a con artist at heart influenced by her mother. Instead, Skyler was never a bad person despite her faults and she was simply a dedicated woman to her family.
Hence the fact of how both end up supporting their partners. ‘Sky’ launders Walter’s money because she wants to protect the family from him. Instead, Kim accomplices Jimmy because she felt alive by reliving her dangerous nature.
infidelity vs. complicity
Yes, the point that fans remember most about Skyler is her infidelity with Ted Beneke. Although Walter had put her in a difficult position, many of her followers never forgave her for this; only some could understand it.
In contrast to the above, Kim easily gained the empathy of the audience, since, despite Jimmy’s lies, she always stayed by his side trying to get him on the right track. Better yet, Wexler’s corruption ends up being more interesting than Skyler’s, since not only does she become more dangerous than the protagonist, but she also manages to redeem herself at the end of the story.
