ToPo is chasing its first championship in the women's Korisliiga.
Women's ToPo, who overwhelmingly won the regular season of the basketball league, started the final series wonderfully after winning the first final game in Helsinki against Kotka's Peli-Karhut by no less than 98–52.
The final series, which is decided by three championships, continues on Sunday in Kotka as a home game of PeKa, who won the previous five championships.
The championship would be historic for both clubs. No less than five clubs have achieved eight women's championships, but now PeKa has the opportunity to rise above Tampere's Pyrinnö, Nokia's Urheilijode, Lahti's Sammo and Forssa's Alu as the only club with nine championships.
Based on the opening of the finals, PeKa's championship celebrations seem far away.
For ToPo, officially called ToPo Juniors, the women's championship gold would be the first in club history. The last time the women's championship came to Helsinki was 18 years ago in 2006, played by the Panthers.
ToPo quickly gained a nine-point lead, but PeKa narrowed the gap to two at the first break. At the end of the second quarter, ToPo increased its lead decisively to 22 points with a precise long throw game.
Surrendered feeling PeKa couldn't get the momentum going in the second half, so ToPo skied to an easy victory. In the end, the difference grew to no less than 46 points, i.e. bigger than in any of the four meetings of the season.
The biggest difference was behind the three-point arc, from which ToPo hit 17 threes with 44 percent accuracy, while PeKa was limited to four threes and hit 21 percent.
“Our goal has been all season in these games, where we just took the first step. We knew that PeKa would change a lot of defensive formations, but we were prepared for that. We did well against the position defense as well”, commented who became ToPo's power player with 21 points and 15 rebounds Taru Tuukkanen.
Randi Brown collected 23 points for Vaisu PeKa.
