Toy company Mattel has announced the sale of a new special-collection model of the Barbie doll, named after transgender actress Laverne Cox, who gained notoriety in the Netflix series “Orange is the new black”. The American actress is the first transgender person to inspire the creation of one of the brand’s dolls.
The release comes in celebration of the artist’s 50th birthday, born May 29, 1972. “We are proud to highlight the importance of inclusion and acceptance at all ages,” Mattel said in a statement.
The new Barbie is now on sale in official stores. In the product description, the company states, “As a four-time Emmy-nominated actress, Emmy-winning producer, and the first black transgender woman to have a leading role in a scripted TV show, Laverne Cox uses her voice to amplify the message of going beyond society’s expectations to live more authentically”.
The doll has a red dress, high-heeled boots, metallic outfit and silver earrings. According to Mattel, the creation of this Barbie collection was made according to the honoree’s own suggestions. “It’s always been my dream to have my own doll. And now I can’t wait for my fans to find my Barbie in high heels,” said the artist.
In 2015, Cox was the first transsexual to be given a statue at the Madame Tussauds museum. The actress was also the first transgender to appear on the cover of Time magazine and to be nominated for an Emmy.
