The physical edition of Baldur's Gate 3 is coming to Xbox Series 4 discs. Michael Douse, director of publishing at Larian, confirmed online that the studio had almost managed to compress the adventure into three discs, but at the end of the day they still needed 500 MB. Larian could have cut some content from this physical release and required players to download it, but decided to put it on a fourth disc.
If you are not familiar with discs and the like, you should know that four discs is a lot and recalls the publication of the first Baldur's Gate game, which in 1998 was released on five CD-ROMs.
In the current and previous generations, multiple-disc releases have all but disappeared thanks to the vastly superior storage capacity of Blu-ray discs compared to previous devices with the best compression technologies. A recent exception is the physical version of Final Fantasy VII Rebirth which includes 2 discs.
The physical release may be delayed
Douse added that the release of the deluxe console version of Baldur's Gate 3 will happen “slightly after” the PC launch and will be probably postponed to April, as the team decided a little late to go with four discs. As various versions of the game are ready, they will ship.
Larian Studios also revealed how much the RPG sold after Early Access.
