The two days of events that will lead to the awarding of the prize have begun in Turin Auto Europe 2022, the recognition assigned by UIGA, the Italian Union of Automotive Journalists. While waiting for the car that will garner the favor of experts, opinion leaders and the public, the special prizes were awarded in collaboration with ASI – Automoclub Storico Italiano. Among the cars that have made the history of Auto Europa in these first 35 years there is also theAlfa Romeo 156, protagonist of an online survey together with Audi 80 and Citroen XM.
The Biscione model received the “Special Performance Award”. The Alfa Romeo model winner of Auto Europa 1998 triumphed in the session of special awards, a sign that the Alfisti still appreciate the model that went out of production in 2007. Next to the car of the Arese car manufacturer then the third generation of theAudi 80, characterized by soft lines and designed according to the diktat “zero edges”, won the “Special Design Award”. Absence of drips, glass and door handles flush with the bodywork were elements of absolute avant-garde for the time and already in 1987 guaranteed extraordinary aerodynamic penetration (0.29 Cx).
Citroën XM receives the “Special Prize for Project Originality”. Dressed in the unmistakable Bertone style, it boasted hydropneumatic suspensions combined with the technology of the early 90s: in less than five hundredths of a second an electronic control unit adapted the suspension stiffness based on parameters such as the position of the steering wheel, accelerator and brake and the transverse and longitudinal accelerations. During the evening held at Villa Rey, home of the Automotoclub Storico Italiano and FIVA – Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens, UIGA told the 35-year history of the Auto Europa award through exhibition panels of past editions and the exhibition of the three historic winners of the award in 1987, 1990 and 1998 which were lined up alongside the 7 finalists of the 2022 award.
