In Austria Alexander Schallenberg has been appointed the new Federal Chancellor. Schallenberg, 52, representing the conservative ÖVP party, took the oath of office on Monday.

Schallenberg moved from the post of foreign minister to chancellor after his party colleague Sebastian Kurz had had to resign as chancellor on Saturday due to a corruption scandal.

Kurz has been the subject of an investigation in a case in which politicians are suspected of having trained for themselves positive media publicity with money. Kurz, 35, has denied allegations of corruption.

Austria president Alexander Van der Bellen said after Schallenberg ‘s appointment that the country’ s government now has a great responsibility to restore confidence.

The center-right People’s Party ÖVP, led by Kurz, and its governing partner, the Greens, hope to move forward from the scandal. The Board aims to extend its term until the end of its term, ie until 2024.

The Kurz case is not Austria’s first political outburst in recent times, but the country has repeatedly drifted into them.
