una new naming strategy
Audi has also been overwhelmed by the process of electrifying its range. And to differentiate the models powered by internal combustion engines from the fully electric ones, the car manufacturer with the four rings has decided to focus on a new naming strategy of its cars: the alphanumeric scheme currently in use will be confirmed but with a clear distinction, which will see the odd numbers label the ICE models and the even numbers the EV ones.
Confirmed the alphanumeric scheme
This was revealed by the CEO of Audi itself, Markus Duesman: The new model designation of the German brand will start with the A4, which will be renamed A5 in the next generation, while the A6 will be renamed A7. In fact, there will continue to be an A4 and an A6, with the difference that in the future they will be completely electric. On the other hand, the house with the four rings is not new to naming strategies of this type: even today Audis with odd numbers differ from those with even numbers by being coupe versions of models sold in the sedan body configuration (the same applies to SUVs).
E-tron, no goodbye
A necessary clarification: Audi will not abandon the e-tron wording, which still today characterizes the fully electric models on the market. It was the CTO of the German brand, Oliver Hoffman, who confirmed it, explaining that customers now know this denomination and know that it represents a full electric Audi, which is why the company wants to remain faithful to this.
Style and design
Will this strategy of differentiating between ICE and EV also translate into distinct styles and designs? Almost certainly yes, even if from this point of view Duesmann reported that further details will be issued at a later time: the only hint made by the company number refers to “emotional and high-performance” electric models.
