LAnyone who loves early modern cuisine should take a look at the autumn auction at Reiss & Sohn. A copy of the Nuremberg “Kuchemaistrey”, first published in 1485, is being offered there, which is available here in a rare Augsburg edition from 1500. The recipes for the chefs of noble families have little in common with everyday fare, but they are all the more extravagant. In order to be able to serve “well fried beaver tail”, an estimated 10,000 euros should be available for the cookbook.
From October 25th to 27th, valuable books, rare prints and graphics will again be up for auction in Königstein. The offer fills three catalogues, with the most valuable lots being summarized as usual in a special catalog and leading the auction. Among them is a 13th-century Italian Bible manuscript with 99 decorative initials: an early imitation of the Paris pocket Bibles, written in small hand on thin parchment (estimate 50,000 euros).
At the top of the offer, with an estimate of 120,000 euros, is a well-preserved Latin edition of the Schedel World Chronicle from 1493 with the famous views of the city in magnificent coloring. This time there are many more works with beautiful woodcut illustrations on offer. Among them is a two-volume Histoire de Poissons by Rondelet, printed in Lyon in 1558 as the first French edition of the book. A good 420 colored text woodcuts show aquatic animals such as fish, mussels, corals and sea urchins (15,000).
More than 500 colored woodcuts adorn an extended edition from 1577 of Bock’s famous herb book (45,000). A magic manuscript with four different “Hell Compulsions” comes from the 18th century, three of which were attributed to Johannes Faust – probably to make the book appear more authentic. Magical scrolls were in high demand at the time (12,000).
The literary section shines with two Hölderlin first editions published during the poet’s lifetime. His debut “Hyperion”, published by Cotta in 1797 and 1799, is said to sell for 10,000 euros. A volume of poetry published by Cotta in 1826 is estimated at 5,000 euros. Estimates for most lots are in the high three to four-digit range, but a “Natural History for Children” from 1809 with 14 folded copper plates can be purchased for an estimated 50 euros. An early pop-up book is called up for an inexpensive 200 euros. Weeden’s “Model Menagerie” (circa 1895) shows wild animals in cages on paper displays.
