At least eleven people have died, including two minors, due to the explosion this Tuesday of a tanker truck in the town of Kigogwa, north of the capital of UgandaKampala, according to authorities.
“Today a tragedy occurred in Kigogwa along Kampala Bombo road when a tanker truck overturned and caught fire, claiming the lives of eleven peopleincluding nine adults and two minors. The victims suffered burns that made them unrecognizable,” reported Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson Patrick Onyango through the social network X.
Authorities have not provided a number of injuries, noting that police are conducting a count of those who have been taken to nearby health centers for treatment. Nor has he made public the identities of the victims.
The accident took place around 3:00 p.m. (local time) and The people “most affected” were those who “rushed to get fuel from the truck”. The fire has also destroyed four buildings that housed nine stores. “Properties worth millions of shillings were lost,” the police added.
“This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the risks associated with fuel tanker truck accidents and the importance of taking care when handling hazardous materials,” he said.
