A spokesman for the Speaker of the US House of Representatives, Drew Hamill, said that Paul Pelosi, 82, “was taken to the hospital, and is expected to make a full recovery.”
Hamill said that the attacker is now in custody, and that the motive behind the attack “remains under investigation,” noting that Nancy Pelosi “was not at home at the time of the attack.”
“The Speaker and her family are grateful to the police and paramedics, and ask that you give them some privacy,” Hamill said in a statement.
A source familiar with the events, who asked not to be named, said that the attacker confronted Paul shouting, “Where is Pelosi, where is Pelosi?”, while two other sources revealed that he had suffered injuries to his head and body, according to the Associated Press.
They added that the attack “was not random,” noting that “the attacker specifically targeted the house,” and that he was placed in prison.
Pelosi is being treated by doctors for severe bruising, swelling and other injuries.
Nancy had just returned to Washington from a security conference in Europe. She is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on Saturday evening with Vice President Kamala Harris.
While the circumstances of the attack were not clear, it raised questions about the safety of members of Congress and their families, as threats to lawmakers reached an all-time high, nearly two years after the attack on the Capitol.
Members of Congress received additional funds to secure their homes, but some lobbied for more protection after receiving threats.
Paul, often seen standing next to Nancy during official events in Washington, is a major investor on the West Coast, and they have five children and several grandchildren.
