Why is retrogaming becoming increasingly successful, to the point of becoming a market within the video game market? Mike Rouse, head of Antstream Arcade, the subscription-based cloud gaming service dedicated to retro gaming, currently available on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and mobile systems, tried to explain this to the microphones of Game Rant.
What is retrogaming?
Rouse began by explaining what he means by retrogaming. Giving a definition that satisfies everyone is virtually impossible, so much so that according to him: “I think that, if I were a historian and had to draw a precise line of demarcation, I would probably say that everything that came out up to the PS1 generation is considered a classicwith the modern period starting from PS2 onwards. But to be honest, my son and my nephew are 9 and 15 and they consider the PS3 a retro console. So they view retrogaming and classic games through a very different lens than I do.”
In fact, the video game industry is now over 50 years old and spans several generations, each of which looks at the past with different eyes. However, people interested in video games and systems from the past are increasingly numerous and It is to them that Antstream looks as a potential audienceBut where does this popularity come from?
“I think it comes down to the fact that a great game is a great game,” Rouse explained. “It’s no different than music. People still listen to the Beatles, right? It’s just great music that people like. I think it’s exactly the same with movies. My kids saw “Back to the Future” for the first time at the beginning of the year and they were blown away. I think it’s the same with any kind of entertainment. People like games, movies, and music that are well-made.”
In short, many people are interested in good games, regardless of when they were made. That’s why they have no problem looking back to find games to play.
