The ‘Narco of Narcos’, Rafael Caro Quintero, was arrested on July 15 by the Secretary of the Navy, in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico. The event was shocking for all the national and local media, because of the entire arrest procedure. In addition, an additional topic was revealed: the death threats received by the anti-narcotics dogs that led to their capture.
According to the Semar (Secretariat of the Navy), training in search and rescue allowed Max, a six-year-old dog, to sniff through the bushes and get the arrest of the drug trafficker and founder of the Guadalajara Cartel, who has two arrest warrants and an extradition order to the United States.
Many of the canines like Max, who have been trained to deal with drug trafficking, are being watched by criminal organizations by hindering their actions, according to the authorities’ complaint.
My admiration and appreciation to the super dog Max who was a fundamental piece in the operation to capture an alleged criminal leader by elements of the @SEMAR_mx 🇲🇽🐕 pic.twitter.com/On1DmOnFyE

Some of these cases have already been seen for years. In 2007, the Belgian Malinois Rex IV, a member of the Special Canine Unit, was kidnapped at the Mexico City International Airport.
The same canine, which was trained in drug detection, was exchanged for a Creole puppy, when other six dogs from the ‘UEC’ were moving to Mazatlan, Sinaloa, as they were assigned for a mission.
After his arrival in Sinaloa, the agents realized that he was replaced by a completely different dog, so they urgently went to the Federal Public Security Secretariat to file the complaint.
The employee who was in charge of moving the dogs to the airport confessed that the change was made with two of his colleagues being threatened by a man with a gun.
Labrador retriever Lucy is another of the dogs that detected explosives in Ciudad Juárez during 2010, the time with the most violence in this city. He was targeted by criminal groups, as they offered a reward for his death.

Many of these animals, which are a help to arrest criminals and reduce the illegality that threaten the Mexican population, are and continue to be adversaries of these groups.
