The gardens of the municipality of Murcia will host a total of fifty nesting boxes for birds that have been made by the students of the Carpentry specialty of the Mixed Employment and Training Program ‘Sustainable Building II’. Municipal sources indicate that the purpose of this project, presented yesterday in the Seda Garden, is to enhance the presence of insectivorous birds as a tool for the biological fight against mosquitoes, while enriching the biodiversity of urban green spaces.
«All the nest boxes are made of pine wood and have been treated with a waterproof outdoor protector, while they are equipped with an opening system for subsequent cleaning, support at the entrance and a vent at the top, to “Avoid condensation and holes in the base, keeping the space dry,” explained the councilor for Open Government, Economic Promotion and Employment, Mercedes Bernabé. In fact, the City Council states that its design has been carried out taking into account the recommendations of the Spanish Society of Ornithology and the Municipal Pest Control Service.
On the other hand, the councilor of the PSOE in the Consistory, Esther Nevado, has asked the current councilor of Health to “attack the root of the plague of mosquitoes that we are experiencing in our municipality.” Nevado assured that “complaints are collected daily from neighbors due to the very high number of these insects” and demanded “actions be implemented to mitigate this problem effectively and immediately.”
