A $ 50 million (approximately € 43 million) loan was collected from I form, Berlin startup born in 2019 that develops animal free cheese, starting from proteins made through precision fermentation, therefore not of animal derivation.
Formo with the new funding will build its pilot plant, to accelerate its production on a commercial scale and enlarge the team dedicated to molecular biology and food sciences, reports PambiancoNews. The German company also plans to expand its product portfolio, ranging beyond mozzarella and ricotta, to cheddar, gruyere and gorgonzola, within a few years.
“For over two years we have been looking for a way on a molecular level to overcome the challenges of our broken food system,” says Britta Winterberg, co-founder and CSO of Formo. “Today, we are extremely excited to see our vision of a greener future come to life through our delicious cheeses, all as we prepare for our first product demonstration event in collaboration with Michelin star chef Ricky Saward.”
