Ajax coach Erik ten Hag will put Onana on the reserve bench against Go Ahead. The experienced Remko Pasveer, who has been an important link in the (European) successes of the Eredivisie leader in recent weeks, is under the bar.
Until last February, Onana was the undisputed number 1 of the team from Amsterdam, but then the 25-year-old goalkeeper was suspended for doping use. Earlier that season, the banned substance furosemide had been found in his blood. Onana defended himself by saying that he had accidentally taken a diuretic from his pregnant wife, but to no avail.
The suspension, which has now ended, degenerated into a contract extension soap. Onana’s contract expires in mid-2022. To prevent the wanted Cameroonian keeper from walking out the door for free, Ajax wanted to extend the contract. A sale last summer was not possible because of that suspension. However, both sides failed to reach an agreement and the deal fell through.
Ajax – Go Ahead Eagles kicks off on Sunday evening at 8 p.m. The match is led by referee Rob Dieperink.
